In the world of communications iCOM is one of those names that you could not fail to have heard of. They have been in business creating leading edge wireless technology and integrating it in to their wireless radios.

Of course, as well as the regular radio handsets iCOM do manufacture some high end communications equipment, and that's fine if you need it. But is iCOM great value for money and how do those radios compare to other also well known brands, and even some far less well known brands? Let's consider a few points.

iCOM have an excellent range of models from lower end walkie talkie type products right through medium level radios and on to world class communications. Of recent times iCOM have been introducing technology like PoC/LTE radios that have huge range. But also they sell ATEX radios, IP radios, and even IDAS NXDN dPMR type devices (think Kenwood as a competitor). And of course iCOM is synonymous with HAM Radio or Amateur radio worldwide supporting all the usual modes for that as well as D-STAR and more. iCOM are also strong with marine radio, air band, and even the lower end PMR446 license free equipment. So what's not to like?

Like anything that is quality and innovative, pricing might be an issue. However, in the UK the only distributor we can find is actually iCOM UK. Distributors we use can and do supply some iCOM communications devices, but it seems that there is only one 'official' distributor and that is iCOM themselves.

While that fact alone can be construed as a 'good thing', often in reality it can stifle competition in our experience and thus customers might find that iCOM equipment may sometimes cost more than other brands. For our company it remains one of the small number of reasons why we don't particularly recommend iCOM as many of the other brands we do sell are at least as innovative and certainly more competitive.

Where we are concerned we do sell iCOM two way radios sourced through other distribution channels but as you will see we do not sell many models. It has always been our consensus when we sell products that if we would not buy them ourselves then why are we selling them?

Do note that we have no issues with the iCOM products themselves but we do have to try and advise customers in the best solutions we know of every time we can. If you need any advice about communications equipment then feel free to call us.
