Some working environments might appear to be 'safe' working areas, but an understanding of the working surroundings might well save lives. One example that we always mention is a good example that many people do not realise could be lethal.

For example, think of a bakery. Typically, most might consider a bakery as being nothing special regarding the workplace. However, bakeries can have a very explosive atmosphere, created when flour is suspended in the atmosphere. It would take just one spark to literally be lethal and ultimately injure possibly very many people or even wipe out the premises!

 

There are many other working environments where using the regular two-way radios could create an incredible and lethal explosion. Some areas we're sure are obvious to the reader but some like the bakery are less obvious. Work areas like a gas works, petrol refinery, chemical works or even a petrol station can be from mildly hazardous to extremely hazardous working areas along with many other surroundings. But also, like the bakery example again, some work areas are not quite so obvious. There are other standards that can apply when choosing intrinsically safe 2 way radios called DSAR (and DSEAR) or Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations from 2002. Those regulations tend to relate to risks from many dangerous substances that we don't cover here.

It is the responsibility of the employer to KNOW what substances are dangerous and to ensure that the risks are reduced to zero or to the minimum achievable.
